Description

The Nordic walking loop through the Irsen Valley follows the Irsen River through blooming broom heaths and idyllic natural scenery, passing by the Daleiden Memorial Cemetery.

The “RWE” Nordic walking trail in the Irsental Valley impressively combines exercise, the enjoyment of nature, and regional history. The approximately 15.2-kilometer loop trail starts in Irrhausen and leads through the unique “Ginsterheiden im Irsental” nature reserve—one of the most charming valley landscapes in the Eifel.

The Irsental captivates visitors with the harmonious interplay of a stream flowing close to nature, species-rich meadows, striking rock formations, and traditional coppice woodlands. Especially in early summer, when the broom blooms in a brilliant golden yellow from May through June, the landscape reveals its very special charm, making the route an extraordinary experience of nature.

Starting in Irrhausen, the route initially follows a section of the well-known Eifelgold Route to Daleiden. There, it passes the “Auf dem Scheid” Memorial Cemetery—the largest memorial cemetery in Rhineland-Palatinate and a place of quiet remembrance. The route then turns south and follows the course of the Irsen River to the Karlshausener Mühle. After crossing the stream, the trail runs along the opposite side of the valley back to Irrhausen.

The tour offers varied landscapes, nature-oriented trails, and numerous opportunities to enjoy the tranquility and unspoiled beauty of the Irsen Valley. Thanks to its moderate difficulty, the route is suitable for both ambitious Nordic walkers and hiking enthusiasts who wish to combine a challenging loop hike with impressive views and cultural highlights.

Highlights along the way:

  • Idyllic valley landscape along the Irsen
  • Golden-yellow blooming broom in the Ginsterheiden Nature Reserve (May through June)
